When Agulu community, through self-help, built a General Hospital, which was commissioned by the then Military Administrator, Navy Captain Abulu, the late Prof. Dora Akunyili assisted in procuring the equipment that saw the hospital take off.
With her expertise as a pharmacist, she ensured the purchase of quality equipment for the hospital, an effort those who sent her to buy the equipment have continued to eulogise.
Though the 40-bed space hospital is functioning and has about three doctors presently, according to the Chief Nursing Officer, Mrs. Rebecca Ezeocha, the equipment at the hospital are now obsolete, especially those at the theatre.
Ezeocha noted that the hospital was upgraded to a branch of the Anambra State University Teaching Hospital by the Peter Obi administration but regretted that the former governor did not complete the new structures being put in place there before he left office.
According to her, work has stopped at the site, as the contractor complained of lack of payment, hence putting the project at the risk of being abandoned.
She said: “The staff and, indeed, the community are waiting and praying for the day the ongoing construction of the structures will be completed and equipped and become operational. We feel concerned that Prof. Akunyili did not live to see the hospital’s development completed.”
